The Telegraph reported on Fri 4th January 2013 that since August 1991 more than 3.5 million human embryos have been created in UK laboratories.
The article states further that “Of the embryos created, almost 840,000 were put into storage for future use and more than 2000 were stored for donation. Almost 5,900 were set aside for scientific research. Almost 1.4 million embryos were implanted in the hope of beginning pregnancies, with fewer than one in six resulting in a pregnancy. Nearly 1.7 million were discarded unused and a further 23,480 were discarded after being taken out of storage.”
According to the article’s figures one can calculate that 14.86 human embryos were created by the industry for each single pregnancy that occurred.
Yet it seems so unnecessary. If medicine and public only knew about and supported medical Natural Procreative Technology, which has none of the problems of embryo freezing or embryo destruction. It just offers a chance for pregnancy cycle after cycle. With no hyper-stimulation it is also safer for the woman and corresponds to the couple’ desire to conceive naturally.
